Here are some elements concerning the conditions and requirements for successful candidates:
Full collaboration with projects within the laboratory is expected. It will therefore be necessary that you live within the Aix-en-Provence/Marseille area (for those of you who will have difficulty in procuring housing at such short notice we can provide a temporary and reasonably priced solution).
Your personal artistic production should be developed within these projects and although we do not demand total exclusivity concerning your professional activity, we do expect that you give priority to work within the lab. The studio space dedicated to Locus Sonus is situated within the School of Arts Aix-en-Provence.
Teaching requirements:
Lessons and other teaching activities will beadapted to the programs of the different art schools supporting Locus Sonus. These activities will vary in form between workshops, of up to five days, weekly lessons and student critique sessions. The work load will average approximately 8 hours per week of which no more than four hours will correspond to "prepared" lessons or seminaries.
The salary will be roughly 800 euros per month (+ obligatory taxes and health insurance) to which could be added additional income from public presentations, which is split amongst the members of the lab.
The contract with Locus Sonus is one year, renewable for a second year by common agreement. Researchers/students results are validated by a jury at the end of each academic year.
Open Call:
Locus Sonus Lab is recruting 3 research fellows for the academic year 2007/2008.
Locus Sonus is a research group specialized in audio art (involving the
participating schools: École Supérieure d'Art d'Aix-en-Provence, École Nationale Supérieure d'Art de Nice Villa Arson and the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Marseille) in collaboration with CNRS/MMSH/LAMES Laboratory of the University of Provence .
Locus Sonus experiments and evaluates the innovative and transdisciplinary
nature of audio art forms in a lab-type context.
Locus Sonus is also concerned with the communal, collective or multi-user
aspects inherent to many emerging audio practices, which involve working as a
group.
This research concentrates on two main themes - sound in relation to space and
network audio systems.
The "Lab" proposes a process combining practical artistic experiment and
critical evaluation within a group context.

Selection Criteria:
The Locus Sonus is a post graduate programme open to highly motivated
researchers and artists interested in audio practices.
Eligible applicants include: art school graduates or university graduates in
art, music, science and technology .
Qualifications and skills
Candidates should posess skills in at least two of the areas listed below :
- • PureData, Max/MSP, etc. (control, synthesis, sound spatialization, etc.)
- • 3D & virtual reality
- • Networks (PHP, streaming, LSL, etc.)
- • Systems administration & unix/linux
- • Electronics (sensors, interactivity, etc.)
- • Design & construction, (installation).
Terms and Conditions:
Successfull candidates will receive a monthly (small) salary (800 euros per month) and will be expected to
take part in teaching activities in the 3 art schools (seminars, presentations and workshops..).
Candidates should be available throughout the year and will be expected to take
up residency in the Aix en Provence / Marseille area.

The research programme includes multiple projects, proposed and developed by
Locus Sonus in collaboration with the LAMES Research group.
These projects result from a continual process of artistic experimentation
concerning interaction between physical and virtual acoustics, while taking
into account social and geographical factors. The term "extranaut" is used here
to designate the behaviour of individuals or communities who navigate between
online and offline spaces or activities.

- • The permutations of network-based projects in physical space. (virtual worlds, online performance, installations)
- • The emergence and and significance of renewable media (flux) as artistic forms.
- • The impact of mobile technologies on art.
