1825 __ Signal with line of cannon
Comment : There have been [...] curious instances of signaling; that line of cannon, for example, within hearing distance of each other from Buffalo ot Albany and thence down the Hudson to New York, by which word was sent to New York in 1825 that Governor De Witt Clinton and his party had started from Buffalo through the Erie Canal in its grand opening celebration. The news traveled from Buffalo to New York in eighty minutes, and a "reply" thundered back in about the same time. (Alvin F. Harlow)
