1961 __ Telephone Concert by Mahalia Jackson
Comment : “Mahalia, In Chicago, Thrills Memphians by Phone.Although snow-bound in Chicago by weather which shut down the city’s airports, gospel singer Mahalia Jackson (by way of a special telephone hookup from a Chicago home) sans spirituals and Christmas carols to a capacity audience at the Owens College auditorium in Memphis. Her half-hour performance was part of a special program by civic leaders “to brighten the hearts” of some 4,000 vote heroes and their children in Tennessee’s racially tense Fayette and Haywood counties. Some if the families have been evicted from their homes (Dec 29, 1960) and are forced to live in tents.”. (Jet, Vol XIX, n°11, 5 Jan 1961, p. 4)
