Numbered devices : Synchronator + Locus Sonus

Since the existence of mechanical reproduction there has always been the economic principle of producing multiples or derivates of works of art; e.g. a painter selling numbered and signed prints of his work. For some artists, especially in contemporary art and media art this became more then an economic principle. For them became a symbolic act referring to modern society mass-production and democracy of populism. At Cimatics we are proud to present some artist who further expand this practice, and for whom this commodification is a natural consequence of their projects. Both 'Synchronator' and 'Locus Sonus' are projects which are determined by the production of technological devices which can be bought by the public. They are no longer symbolic acts, but creative answers for for technical related issues in a socio-cultural context. the artist will be present in the 'Festival Meeting Area' for a presentation of their 'numbered' devices.

Locus Sonus Streambox

On Saturday Nov. 28, the Locus Sonus streambox project will be presented by one of its makers.

KRN's daily life, in her street: taxis and fast buses which pass, the neighbors who laugh and pray, the birds which sing, the horses which trot, the Muezzin, the itinerant salesmen, the horns of cars, trucks and boats, far off, and the truck-garbage can, the Muezzin again, the masons who work non-stop, the planes, the dogs which bark, the children who laugh, the women who cook, the wind, the Muezzin still... The whole under an online Linux Streambox. This Stream was the first to be opened on the African Continent. It's part of a larger Project called 'Locus Sonus's Locustream', which presents a number of audio streams as live & different 'material' for audio installations & performances, available from anywhere in the World. Today, about 25 streams are available through a 'soundmap' interface.

Cimatics is hosting the first edition of the International Marketplace for Digital Arts - Europe (IMDA). IMDA was initially launched in 2007 within the Elektra festival in Montreal, Canada. The International Marketplace for Digital Arts is a meeting for professional networking among those active in the field of production, creation and diffusion of digital arts.

Dedicated to the presentations of festivals, art galleries, labs, artists, cultural entrepreneurs and a range of organizations and cultural institutions that operate on an international level, the IMDA offers to its participants the occasion to attend presentations of various high profile socio-cultural projects, opening a window over the huge contemporary panorama that rotates around the art and digital culture's world.

The value of the IMDA resides in the ability of gathering the creative minds in an informal atmosphere, which not only allows the exchange of ideas and projects, but also creates the basis for the emergence of new collaborations and cultural exchange, also made possible by the international nature of the event.

Placed in the contemporary artistic scenario in which market rules often and sadly prevail to the detriment of socio-cultural aspects, the IMDA represents a unique occasion not only to stay updated on the latest news, thanks to the presentations and the promotional material offered to participants, but also the way to contribute to the development and diffusion of a collaborative and open culture, which can give birth to the emergence of a real community that may enhance the progress of digital culture that today is getting lost in the maze of a context more and more ruled by the market.
